Why Private Lessons?

Private lessons have distinct characteristics over other forms of training such as group classes.
Behaviors
Some people find it helpful to work on specific factors in their home environment, that may not addressed in class. We can work on anything you want, whereas classes have a specific curriculum.
Customized pace
It can be very helpful to have a customized pace, where you might take a week off or switch to a different day.
Scheduling flexibility
Private lessons can be done on your schedule, assuming we have availability. Some people can only fit them in on weekends or during the day. In addition, the day of week could change from one session to the other.
One-on-one attention
Some people learn more effectively in a one-on-one setting. The trainer can spend as much time as you need in order to help you learn.
Dog focus
Some dogs can't focus as well in a setting such as a class. With private lessons, your dog can focus on the task at hand without being distracted by other nearby dogs.
Real-world scenarios
With private lessons, we can go into real-world scenarios such as riding an elevator, walking down the sidewalk, being in your lobby, going to the store, and more.

Single lesson parameters
You can schedule a single lesson in order to try out the trainer or work on a simple issue.

  • Payment is due when booking each lesson. Until we receive payment, the lesson is not finalized and the timeslot could be given to someone else.
  • The payment is refundable if cancelling seven days in advance. If cancelling in under seven days, it is not refundable and cannot be credited towards another lesson, as we would likely not be able to fill that space.
  • You can pay for a single lesson, then apply it to a package once you feel comfortable with moving forward. This can only be done for the first lesson.
  • Private lessons last for 60 minutes.
Training package parameters
A dog cannot be fully trained or resolve challenges in one or two lessons. Oftentimes, you need at least six lessons, and sometimes more, in order to achieve the results you desire. That's why we encourage a package that includes multiple lessons, so you create a comprehensive training plan up front and work towards the goal in a more structured manner.

  • Full payment must be received before your second lesson. The trainer can take payment at your first lesson.
  • Future package sessions are refundable if you decide it's not working out, although we strongly recommend giving it time before coming to this conclusion.
  • Once you book a lesson, that particular lesson is not refundable if cancelled with less than seven days, as we would likely not be able to fill the space. We would deduct that day from your package.
  • You can pay for a single lesson, then apply it to a package once you feel comfortable with moving forward. This can only be done for the first lesson.
  • Private lessons last 45-60 minutes.
  • Private lesson packages expire in 90 days.
  • A private lesson package is assigned to one trainer. Once you are underway with the package, you must continue working with that trainer for each session during the package. If you are unhappy with the trainer or results, please speak with us.

FAQs

Will you be able to train my dog in 1-2 lessons?

We can certainly come over for 1-2 lessons to start working together, but that would not be sufficient for getting results for most behaviors such as loose leash walking. Most dogs need at least six lessons in order to learn a behavior like that, and with our program, we give you harder and harder exercises each week in order to build your dog's skill level. Having said that, sometimes people need less than six because it's a much more simple behavior they are trying to address. When we book the lessons with you, we would discuss your options and let you know what is the recommended plan based on your goals.

What schedule would the lessons generally follow?

We would typically recommend one week in between sessions in order to achieve results for most behaviors such as leash walking. This gives you time to practice the home exercises, but the ability for us to give feedback on your technique before you go further. It can also be great accountability for you when you know you have a week to make progress. Having said that, it may not always be possible to go exactly one week later each time, and there may be times where you skip a week due to travel or other reasons. It's very flexible, and you can discuss the overall plan with your trainer. We have found it best to try and schedule as many lessons in advance as possible, so you get the dates and times that you want.

What if my dog is reactive when guests come to my home?

First, we would need you to be very upfront about this when contacting us, so the trainer is not walking into a risky situation. In addition, we would likely ask you to follow certain safety protocols. Also, it may be best to start working at our training facility first, or at least outside of your home on the sidealk, and get your dog acclimated to the trainer before going into your home. One way or another, we could likely make it work. If you are trying to address fear-based behaviors such as stranger danger or guest anxiety, that would likely fall into the category of our Behavioral Modification program. See the Training Overview page for more information.

What if it is during the winter, or in the middle of the summer?

Private lessons can be effective during any time of the year. When the temperature is too hot or cold, we can find alternative places to work, including inside your home, high-rise hallways, retail stores, dog-friendly hotels, one of our training locations, and others.

What days and hours are available for private lessons?

Our trainers work during the day through early evening, including weekdays and weekends. We want to make it easy for you.

Is it better to work at my home or at your facility?

The answer to that question depends on your goals and your dog. Coming to our facility can be beneficial because we have an enormous amount of resources and equipment to help the training process, it can be helpful to get out of the home environment, and can be a good solution if your dog is not thrilled about a stranger in the home. Coming to your home can be helpful because we can work in your home environment and help you make adjustments, plus it may be more convenient for you. We can also work in both places, so your dog gets the benefit of both.

How will I remember everything the trainer told me?

Our TrainTrack online portal will have the exercises, recommendations, videos, and products that the trainer has assigned to you after each lesson. It keeps everything handy in one place, and can be easily accessed from any device with a browser.

What if my dog needs some listening skills (e.g., loose leash walking), but I also want to include behavioral modification for some more complex, fear-based behaviors?

We can certainly tackle both types of behaviors, and can have a blended price that takes both formats into consideration. Adding the behavioral modification training will likely add more sessions, as this is typical for fear-based behaviors.

Positive Reinforcement Methods

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training in Chicago Tucker Pup's only uses positive reinforcement methods. We do not use prong collars, choke chains, shock collars, poking, yelling, leash popping, or other aversive methods. Dominance can easily cause your dog to distrust you, and to only comply in order to avoid a negative outcome. This isn't truly learning, and can cause your dog's behaviors to become much worse.

Positive reinforcement is much more effective for creating long-term learning and a stronger relationship with your dog. Dogs love training when this style is being used, are much more responsive to their owners, and are much happier in general. In short, positive reinforcement gives you the best chance of success, and can be the fastest way to get results. If you are hesitant, please trust us on this one and feel free to ask us questions.

Positive reinforcement combines an encouraging tone of voice, clear instruction, relaxed body language, the use of rewards (e.g., treats, favorite toy), patience, and empathy.

If you are concerned about giving treats, keep in mind that they work very well for most dogs, you can phase them out at your discretion, and it is possible to use something else that your dog values, such as a favorite toy.

TrainTrack™ Online Portal

Online Video Dog Training Chicago
Re-Watch Training Exercises on Your Device

Tucker Pup's offers a proprietary online system called TrainTrack™ that revolutionizes the way dogs are trained.

The trainer will show you the exercises in person, then you can access TrainTrack to see the homework and other helpful information. Many exercises include videos, and all of them include instructions. It also includes handouts and a documentation of what you covered. This is incredibly helpful because there is a lot of information to take in, and it can be hard to remember everything that was demonstrated and discussed.

In addition, you can log your progress on TrainTrack as you are working on your home exercises. This can be invaluable for ensuring that you spend enough time, in various settings, for your dog to learn the methods thoroughly.

For private lessons, you can even upload videos to your trainer, and they can watch them in between sessions to help provide advice.

TrainTrack works on any Internet-connected device, so you can use it on your mobile phone, even when you're on a walk or working outdoors.

TrainTrack is used for all of our training services, including private lessons and classes.

To access TrainTrack, you must log in to our website. On your Customer Center, you will see the link to TrainTrack towards the top of the page.
