Dog training for downtown dogs requires a very different approach than training in quieter neighborhoods, especially in a dense, urban environment. Our Downtown Dog Program is designed specifically for city living, where elevators with unfamiliar dogs, constant foot traffic, narrow sidewalks, construction noise, fireworks, limited green space, and close-quarters housing can quickly overwhelm dogs with otherwise mild temperaments. In a downtown setting, stress compounds rapidly, and behaviors like reactivity, anxiety, pulling, barking, or shutdown are often environmental responses rather than obedience issues. Our program is customized to your real-world urban conditions.
You're Not Alone
We work with downtown dog owners every day who thought they were “doing something wrong,” only to learn that their dog is responding normally to an intense environment. Reactivity, anxiety, pulling, barking, or shutdown behaviors are incredibly common in urban settings, especially for rescue dogs or dogs that did not grow up in the city. With the right structure, guidance, and environment-specific training, these challenges can be addressed — and life downtown with your dog can become calmer, more predictable, and far more enjoyable.

How Progress Feels
Over time, small wins stack up. Your dog recovers faster after unexpected encounters. Focus returns more quickly when a trigger appears. Walks feel less like obstacle courses and more like actual walks. You stop constantly scanning for exits, corners, or empty stretches of sidewalk, and your grip on the leash relaxes.
Eventually, daily downtown life can feel manageable again. You trust your dog in tight spaces. Your dog looks to you for guidance when the city gets loud or overwhelming. Elevators, lobbies, and crowds no longer dictate your daily routine. Progress feels like confidence, predictability, and the freedom to move through the city together without constant stress.
Skills We Can Improve

- Elevator anxiety
- Leash reactivity, such as in hallways, your lobby, in the elevator, or on the sidewalk
- Loose leash walking
- Passing through crowds of people, such as tourists
- Polite greetings

- Noise sensitivity
- Long recovery periods after a stressful incident
You can mix and match behaviors depending on your situation. We will customize a program based on your dog, home environment, and lifestyle.
If you don't see a skill on the list, just ask us!
How the Program Works
Daily living can be highly stressful for dogs, and we must be empathetic to the pressure they are under, especially if they are showing fear.
Every case depends on how many skills you want to build. After the Dog Diagnostic, the trainer will propose the number of sessions and the overall price.
FAQs
What makes this program different than other training programs you offer?
We understand the unique challenges of living downtown with a dog. We can help with behaviors across a number of factors such as long elevators, having a lack of green space, nearby fireworks, lots of people including tourists, and much more. We will develop a custom program based on your environment and lifestyle.
Can I enroll in this program if we don't actually live downtown?
Absolutely - the behaviors we cover are common for high rises and high-density neighborhoods, including elevator anxiety, leash reactivity, loud noises, crowds of people, and more. This could be relevant for many neighborhoods in Chicago.
Positive Reinforcement Methods
Tucker Pup's only uses positive reinforcement methods. We do not use prong collars, choke chains, shock collars, poking, yelling, leash popping, or other aversive methods. Dominance can easily cause your dog to distrust you, and to only comply in order to avoid a negative outcome. This isn't truly learning, and can cause your dog's behaviors to become much worse.
Positive reinforcement is much more effective for creating long-term learning and a stronger relationship with your dog. Dogs love training when this style is being used, are much more responsive to their owners, and are much happier in general. In short, positive reinforcement gives you the best chance of success, and can be the fastest way to get results. If you are hesitant, please trust us on this one and feel free to ask us questions.
Positive reinforcement combines an encouraging tone of voice, clear instruction, relaxed body language, the use of rewards (e.g., treats, favorite toy), patience, and empathy.
If you are concerned about giving treats, keep in mind that they work very well for most dogs, you can phase them out at your discretion, and it is possible to use something else that your dog values, such as a favorite toy.
Our Travel Radius
One of our trainers can home to your home if you live within our travel radius. We routinely go all throughout Chicago each day, including to Lakeview, Lincoln Park, Bucktown, Wrigleyville, Gold Coast, River North, downtown, East Loop, West Loop, South Loop, and all neighborhoods in between.
These boundaries go north to Irving Park Road, east to the lake, south to Roosevelt, and west to Western Avenue.
If you live a few streets beyond these boundaries we can likely still come to your home.
Otherwise, you would need to come to our training facility.

A Happy Training Customer
Maureen O'Brien-Cruz, KPA CTP
Maureen was an amazing trainer!
Max has always been very hesitant and fearful of new people. Maureen remained patient, calm, and consistent every session and gained Max's trust very quickly; which again was very surprising to see because this is something we have struggled with for years. Maureen was very thorough when explaining different techniques and training methods. Max' walks have been SO MUCH better, we are able to go on more calmer walks, he is more relaxed and attentive to me when walking. His focus and reactivity when seeing other dogs/people during the walks has decreased.
Again, thank you to Maureen in helping us better Max's life!
